- One of the oldest smokeless military rounds,
- the 7x57mm was introduced in the 1892 Mauser
- rifle, developed by Paul Mauser. The Mauser
- rifle and cartridge was so effective against
- American forces in the Spanish-American War, that
- the U.S. 1903 Springfield rifle was derived from
- the Belgian design.
-
- While many Mauser-actions can withstand
- pressures of 50,000+ c.u.p, these early rifles
- were only designed to handle a maximum of 45,000
- c.u.p. American ammunition manufacturers have
- responded by offering quite conservative factory
- 7mm loadings. As with the 8x57mm cartridge,
- European cartridge makers offer much livelier
- 7x57mm ammunition than their American
- counterparts.
-
- The handloader should be conservative if
- loading for an original-issue 7x57mm military
- rifle, saving higher-pressure experimentation for
- rifles of modern construction. As always,
- approach maximum loads slowly.
-
- Current factory offerings include a 145 grain
- bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2690 fps.
